Below are some of the best films from the FILMSshort competition.

Tonight Is Not A Good Night For Dying by A Asgari ('12) (Iran) (4m)

Tonight Is Not A Good Night For Dying by Iranian filmmaker Ali Asgari was selected as the overall winner of the summer 2012 competition. It is a simple idea beautifully executed with great performances. It's also nice to see a film outside of the UK or US taking the competition prize. In Tonight Is Not A Good Night For Dying we are given a POV shot of a man who has fallen or jumped from an apartment above...

The Duel At Blood Creek by Leo Burton (2010) (UK) (14m)

The fabulous comedy, The Duel At Blood Creek, was a winner in the 4th FILMSshort Competition. Blood Creek is the name of a popular site where men settle matters of honour with an old-fashioned duel. Unfortunately, it is proving rather too popular today as several would-be duellers arrive at the same time. The bickering and posturing builds up until the fighting begins. But who will survive in such a bloodthirsty age as this?

The Stairway

Period Piece by James McLellen (2014) (USA) (12m)

Period Piece sees a film director struggling to get her schmaltzy climactic scene finished in a world overrun by zombies. Imagine The Walking Dead where they are trying to continue the film industry. Set on a ranch in the American midwest, Period Piece opens with what appears to be a terrible cliche. However, all is not as it seems and we soon discover that we are on a film set and every member of the crew is primed for a possible zombie attack.

The Stairway

The Stairway by Alex Torterotot (2011) (France) (4m) *

The Stairway (L'Escalier) by Alexandra Torterotot was the winner of the first ever FILMSshort competition. Torterotot is a French filmmaker and The Stairway was shot in her native Paris. Written by Sylvain Aubert-Garmendia, it is a simple and nightmarish story of a man who cannot escape a never-ending but always changing series of stairways. When not making short films, Alexandra works as a script supervisor and putting together feature films.
