A GIRL IN THE RIVER - SHARMEEN OBAID-CHINOY (2015)

Directed by Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness won the Best Short Documentary Oscar in 2016. It tells the story of Saba, a young Pakistani woman who managed to escape from an attempted honour killing by her father and uncle. In an examination of the Pakistani justice system, we learn how Saba narrowly escaped with her life after being shot and left for dead, simply because she married the man once promised to her. Pakistan is a traditionally Muslim country coming to terms with the modern world where woman hope to be treated with respect and equality.
