CANNES ANIMATIONS 3

More winning animations from the Cannes film festival.

Ark

The Ark by Grzegorz Jonkajtys (2007) (Poland) (8m) *

Polish filmmaker Grzegorz Jonkajtys was nominated for the Palme d'Or in 2007 (but animations and live-action do compete for the same Golden Palme at Cannes) with this superbly finished computer animation. Ark (Arka) shows us a post-apocalyptic world in which one man is leading the survivors to salvation before the cruel twist is revealed (along with possibly the sexiest nurse in short film history).

Printed Rainbow

Printed Rainbow by Gitanjali Rao (2006) (India) (15m) *

Indian animator Gitanjali Rao won the Kodak Short Film Award, Small Golden Rail and the Young Critics Award with Printed Rainbow at Cannes in 2006. It is a beautiful and touching film that switches between drab and vivid colours as it tells the story of a lonely woman (and her cat) who lives in the dreary city but dreams of an exotic, Indian adventure when prompted by the pictures on matchboxes.

No Support

No Support by R. Castillo & A. Urrutia (1998) (Mex) (5m) *

This stop-motion animation by Mexican duo René Castillo and Antonio Urrutia was nominated for a Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1998. No Support (Sin Sostén) sees a suicidal man climb onto the rooftop between two billboards - one with a busty pin-up advertising a bra (the title is a play on words!) and the other with a mounted cowboy. When the time comes to jump, the huge advertisements come to life...

Gagarin by Alexij Kharitidi (1995) (Russia) (3m) *

Gagarin won the Palme d'Or in 1995 and was also nominated for a Best Short Animation Oscar in 1996. It is a very simple, short and sweet hand-drawn animation about a caterpillar yearning to fly like the butterflies and birds, but unable to do so. It is also a lesson on being careful what you wish for when he spies his chance! Gagarin was made by Russian Alexij Khartidi, who now lives in Canada and continues to animate, currently working for Little Animation, Inc.
